Bringing a child into the world is one of the most exciting events in a lifetime. It doesn’t matter if this is the first baby in a family or the fifteenth, it’s still an amazing celebration.

In our culture where Hollywood has planted such crazy images of birth, breastfeeding, and parenting; a quality childbirth class offers new families a strong foundation for getting things off to a good start. Many parents these days are foregoing classes. Some opt to turn over responsibility to their care providers; others find that TV shows provide enough information; still others think that classes have no value as they think classes only teach how to behave in a hospital. To the first group, I hope that they take back their power – their baby is counting on them. To the second group, this “education” is far from complete, provides inaccurate information, and induces fear. To the third group, I agree; that certainly is the case for some classes and why it is important to find a class that is truly beneficial.

Some things to consider when choosing a class:

1. Most importantly, who is paying the instructors? If it’s a hospital, then chances are class will be a preparation for interventions the birth place prefers. If the instructors are independent, then you are the employer and their loyalty is to you.
2. What is the basic philosophy of the class? Will it create fear or trust? Will it imply guilt if a certain outcome is not achieved or support you no matter your choices?
3. How long is the class? A 4 week class simply cannot cover the information that a longer series provides. Most labor techniques take time and practice; ensuring that you have the time to incorporate the information into your life will be of great help in labor.
4. How big is the class? Making sure classes are small enough for you to get the attention you deserve is important. Do not get lost in the crowd.
5. What other classes may be of use? Are they included? Sometimes there are pregnancy classes, labor and birth classes, breastfeeding classes, baby care classes, and so many more. If everything is all under one roof, so to speak, it makes scheduling that much easier.
6. How interactive are classes? Most people don’t like to listen to a 3 hour lecture and different people learn better with different methods. Find a class that is suitable for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners alike.
7. How experienced are the educators? Consider years of teaching, training and certifications past and present, as well as personal birth experiences.
8. What physical tools are provided for your learning and use? Are the materials something that will help you in labor?
9. Is the information up to date and evidence based? Make sure instructors continue to learn and grow.
10. Do the instructors have a network of support to help you with your specific situation? Knowing the local resources is invaluable.
