Changes in life may result in stress, confusion, sadness and grief. Life may not make sense. Understanding the effects of change, stress, and loss on the mind, emotions and body can increase our ability to live life in a more positive way. While a person can feel better after a good talk with a friend or relative, many times talking to a professional provides more clarity and tools for change. My role as a counselor is to listen and offer options and insights without imposing my own agenda. Together, we can find the best way for you to identify the goals, values and quality of life that make sense to you.
My special areas of interest and expertise are the transitions in life: loss, grief, changes due to aging, personal growth, and life threatening illnesses.
If you would like an opportunity to face life’s challenges constructively and confidently in the safety of a professional relationship, please call for a free consultation to see if our work together will fit your needs.
FOCUS OF MY PRACTICE
As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) I have training and experience in a wide variety of mental health and personal growth issues. The following issues however, are of special interest to me and reflect both my twenty years of experience in Hospice and my own personal growth.
LIFE CHANGES:
As we age, physical changes may require life changes – moving to a new home, living with a relative or moving to an assisted living residence or nursing home. These changes require an adjustment by both the individual and the family. The opportunity to talk about the feelings, goals, fears and stresses of these life changes, either individually or as a family, may ease the tensions of the transition.
LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESSES:
Navigating the confusion and chaos of medical decisions, changes in family roles, lifestyle changes, and loss that accompany a life-threatening illness may make it difficult to identify the goals and qualities of life that are important to you. Together, we can explore the questions, challenges and issues that help clarify what has meaning, value and importance to you and your family.
PERSONAL GROWTH with VOICES DIALOGUE:
We as humans resist changing the way we cope with life. As we age, we often find that our usual coping mechanisms start to fail and a new way of addressing life’s issues is needed. Voices Dialogue is a method for contacting, getting to know and working with the many selves that make up each of us. These selves determine the way in which we see the world, control our behavior and limit our ability to make conscious choices. Voices Dialogue facilitates lasting change by helping us learn to be more than our individual selves, by incorporating selves that we have ignored, and by developing an “inner teacher” that can choose to respond with consciousness to whatever life throws at us rather than with our old, automatic patterns of behavior. As you learn about your selves and integrate new ways of seeing the world, your own deep wisdom becomes available to you.
